Many times online users do not know whether they violated any copyright laws by downloading the music tracks off the sites. In the past, several P2P network companies have been prosecuted and their operations have been shut down. This time it was Limewire which was sued by the music companies and associations. Their claim was that Limewire provided technology and ways to download the songs illegally to thousands of the users. However, Limewire has settled the legal issues with the associations. Limewire is still in the legal soup because other 13 companies are still pursuing their legal cases in the courts. Piracy is certainly a big issue because it eats away the profits of the recording companies and musicians. Many users think that music has to be free. Though it can be free but recording companies and publishers never agree to do so because the cost to reach market and produce is enormous. The copyrights are very complex issues to deal with. Associations of music companies have taken very tough steps against piracy. P2P clients and networks emerged as the main culprits. Limewire is the newest in the series of the lawsuits and claims which run into huge amounts. The remaining legal suits would be heard by the court sometime in future.
